body positivity

This New York Fashion Week, inclusivity reigns supreme. Scores of plus-size and differently abled models were seen strutting down the catwalk in all their glory. From Christian Siriano, Chromat and Prabal Gurung to the LOFT show at the 2nd annual theCURVYCon and Mara Hoffman presentation, these beauties and more were finally given their due to shine on the fashion mainstage. And off the runways, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and size-inclusive retailer Dia & Co have joined forces for a T-shirt campaign called #TeeUpChange. For the project, five prominent body positive advocates — musician Lizzo, designers, Marissa Petteruti, Christian Siriano, and Tracy Reese, and tennis star, Venus Williams — created five limited-edition slogan tees ranging from 0X-5X with empowering messages. All the shirt sales will fund education for the next generation of size-inclusive designers.

As the body positivity movement pushes forward full steam, with more and more designers using their platforms to highlight the importance and necessity of size diversity in fashion by speaking up, casting a wide range of models for their shows, and creating clothing for full-figured bodies, we’re inching more and more toward realizing an industry where everyone, regardless of their size, is finally respected and celebrated — and long-held standards of beauty that privileges thin people no longer exist.

Ahead, find the most following awe-inspiring body positive moments that we’ve witnessed at NYFW that prove we’re well on our way to achieving that mission. Check back periodically for additional updates.
